>I met Kris on a hot July night in Kampala, Uganda. We were both watching the final game of the 2010 World Cup, but at different locations in town.
Kris was on a mission trip to Uganda with five other Americans from Christ Community United Methodist Church in Hummels Wharf, Pennsylvania. They choose to watch the game with their friend’s on their final night in Uganda at Ethiopia Village, a restaurant.
A suicide bomber sitting at their table detonated himself just before halftime. The Somalian terrorist group Al-Shabab set off three bombs at two locations in town, killing more than 70 in retaliation for Ugandan peacekeeping force in Mogadishu, Somalia.
Once inside Mulago Hospital, I met Kris. He was being treated for wounds to the right leg and left eye. After about 30 minutes of together talking, he had to speak with US embassy officials and I had to carry on photographing.
A year later I was in the States and was able to get in touch with Kris. He was a few hours north of me, so I drove up for a day to spend time with him and make some photos. Kris was interning at a local church in State College, Pa. and invited me to hang out for the day shadowing him at work and bible study in the evening. It was a really amazing thing to be able to sit down and talk with him about his experience that night and mine. Kris was also nice enough to introduce me to the other five Americans that he was with that night at the Ethiopia Village, so I could photograph them as well. Being able to sit down one on one with all of them and hear their stories from that night was really amazing and powerful.
Thank you Kris for your time and amazing generosity.
In the next few weeks I’m going to be working on bring this blog back to life from the grave. Please stay tuned for a lot of updates that I am really excited to share, a lot has happened since the last update on this blog.
This image was made today on my way back into Cape Town from Hout Bay. It’s winter here in South Africa and it’s cold and rains a lot, so this is what we see quiet a bit when we look to the Atlantic Ocean.

>Last weekend a group of us went to Murchison Falls for a goodbye weekend for some amazing people leaving Gulu soon. We camped in the middle of the game park, out in the middle of the bush. We had an armed guard, Julis, who was a lot of fun and let us take pictures holding his machine gun! We camped under a tree on the delta of the Nile river…amazing weekend.

Last week we had a crazy thunderstorm in Gulu. I shot this from the restaurant I was having dinner at that had no windows…it was a lot of fun.
